Thank you for a memorable stay
I have stayed at this B&B for a number of years now, since it was newly opened. I went for a wedding, birthday party, and a couples getaway. I would rate this as the best B&B I have stayed in.The innkeeper are professional, courteous and very sensitive to my needs. They will go out of their way to attend to your every need and desire. The B&B is clean and cozy, both inside and outside. Chef Dans menu suit my palate at reasonable prices. They will willingly arrange to provide you with any additional request, be it lunch, dinner or breakfast. I can't wait to stay there again.

dirty, bathroom hotel
the staff were nice. the room was comfortable. the bathrooms especially the bathtubs were filthy with a couple bugs and spiders. for $115 a night, it should be spotless. the staff was not available at check in and do not give u access to the inside of the hotel during your stay. they accidently locked the door and i didnt know if i was going to get to my room or not. i didnt know if i was going to be able to check in or not due to staff not being there.

If Grandma lived by the railroad tracks...
This is a been there done that experience. The trains passing by was the most interesting part of this stay. It was the best part, but it was also the worst part. 30 to 40 trains go by (at least once an hour), 24 hours a day. During the day it was fun watching the trains, they pass by the hotel as far away as the 2 lane road. It is loud! The engines were load, the wheels squeaked &squealed. Wave to the engineers and get tooted at! In the middle of the night, when they pass by you WILL hear it &wonder if you are going to get hit! It's still fun, until you get tired of woken up. But it was a great experience! The hotel itself was featured on national TV shows for its uniqueness. The owners put a lot of work into restoring it. It has a lot of charm. Most of the bedrooms are very charming. If you liked staying at Grandma;s as a kid & miss it, this will bring back memories, exactly like it was 40 years ago... untouched! Don't come here if you are used to the comforts of the Hilton. The place was renovated by the owners several years but it could use some revamping. The bathrooms were very old and need of updating. For breakfast, grab a dusty box of cereal. Garden area is quaint but the weeds are winning. The hottub... eww, very dirty, don;t even think about it.

What happened to this place.
The door on the side was dirty, the hall rug was very dirty, the place was very musty and a lot of books and paperbacks along the hall. Room was at best dingy and the bathroom was a disaster. The final straw was the cat sitting on the table down stairs where breakfast was to be served. It was sent into the kitchen and the door closed. I don't think pets are supposed to be on the table or wandering around the kitchen do you? We left and so would you if you were us. It looked nothing like the pictures on the web page.

This place sure went down hill per internet pictures
Side door was dirty, hall rugs were dirty, lots of paperback books in hall and very musty. Room was dingy and curtains were dirty and the bathroom was not attractive. The dining table had a cat setting in the middle and when we approached it the inn keeper sent it into the kitchen which he closed the door very fast. That was the last straw and we left and I sure hope I don't get a bill for this deplorable inn which should be taken off the internet.

Wonderful place to stay!
The following is part of my letter to Dan and Elisse Clark thanking them for a memorable visit. It reflects my view of this lovely inn. Dear Elisse and Dan, Thank you for a memorable stay--I had a wonderful time. You have created a very special and unique place. This was like staying in an art gallery with great food and trains. But the thing that made it really special was both of you and the welcome that you gave me. Thank you.

Not what it seems
This place looks like it needs a good deep cleaning. Only fast food available and not close by. Advertises TV but not in rooms. Owner was nice, but not a place to stay unless you want to hear trains go by all night.

fabulous
I stayed at the Elkhorn Inn in May of last year for a special party weekend. Dan and Elisse Clark were fantastic hosts! They were especially helpful in assisting me with my concerns about my broken leg. Chef Dan went out of his way to accommodate me, and created a special, delicious, and memorable dinner party that will not be forgotten! I had a Private Bath Guest Room on the second floor, and it was lovely- decorated with art and a pretty vintage quilt, and a cool, old-fashioned claw-foot bathtub, too! This is not the first time I've stayed at the inn; I also stayed there in 2004 after they first opened, so this was really like coming home, and it was so nice to be able to come back. I'm looking forward to returning again this fall. Because the inn is pet-friendly, on my first stay I was able to bring my cat, too, which was great. I highly recommend this charming Inn as a destination which has adventure, fantastic food, and, of course, the beautiful mountains!

Best Kept Secret in WV
Nestled in the hills of Kimball, WV, the Elkhorn Inn is like taking a trip through time. A well preserved 1920's period building with a NYC art gallery hidden inside. The cuisine rivals any 5 star restaurant courtesy of its resident Chef , Dan Clark. he is an absolute master and prepares dishes from all over the world. His clay-pot chicken is to-die-for. Whether you are an avid train fan, just looking for a quiet place to get away from it all or would simply like to experience the finest cooking to be found...this is the place to be. Dan and Elise Clark will make you feel right at home.. in their home. They are both; well traveled world adventures and local historians. I cannot think of a better way to spend an evening than sitting with them for conversation with a glass of wine after one of Dan's extraordinary meals. I only wish I could give the food rating a higher score.

Fun - train watching and exploring coal country
We had a very fun get-away to the Elkhorn Inn in beautiful Landgraff, W. Va. I have roots the coal country of southern West Virginia, but even if you don't, it's fun to explore. Train watching is an integral part of any trip to the Elkhorn Inn - more fun! And the dining was superb.

Gold Mine Potential
Came with a group for the weekend to ride the Hatfield & McCoy Trails. Decided to book a room here at the Elkhorn Inn & Theatre after viewing their website. I have to say, the reviews & the pictures on their website & brochure paint a very differant picture than what we found. First there is no Theatre, just a building in the back that they hope to make into a Theatre one day. I will say the Owners were very kind & polite and eager to assist you! However, upon arrival & checking out our rooms, we first found a dirty towel laying in the floor of our tub, which was taken care of immediately. However, there was an issues with Stink bugs in our bathrooms throughout our stay. The walls, curtains and such really didn't appear to look like they had been dusted/washed & cleaned in months. Then the next morning when we went down to the dining area to eat breakfast we found several tiny ants crawling all over the table around the coffee pot & cups and inside the wrapped cresent rolls that had been set out for the guest. Needless to say, we lost our appetite and went elsewhere to eat our meals. For the price we paid for our stay, we expected more. I hope the owners take this review as constructive criticism and make some needed improvements because it is a very neat old historic building close to wonderful riding trails and has so much potential to be a real hot spot!

A Very Happy Stay with Friends
I loved my stay at the Inn. I found my hosts very charming and willing to make my stay a pleasurable one. I loved the feeling of the rooms being homey and not hotel like. I have some dietary restrictions and my hosts were very accommodating to my diet. I would definitely recommend this Inn to my friends and family. Its not often you can find a five star quality food while rail fanning but this Inn does it well.

Thank you for a wonderful stay!
We had the pleasure of staying with Dan and Elisse for our thirtyfirst wedding anniversary. They are very thoughtful and and wonderful hosts quick to satisfy any need you might have. The inn is amazing with art and sculpture at every corner. While we did not get to enjoy any of Dan's gourmet cooking (we usually were out late exploring) getting to know Dan I am positive it would be delicious! Their breakfasts were ideal and a great way to start the day. We especially enjoyed our many conversations with Dan, Elisse and their close friend Judy. Being railfans our initial draw to the Inn was the trains. What a show! We were serenaded day and night with their sounds. What else can I say? A grand old building, wonderful hosts, good food and trains. It is the perfect combination. We will be back! Thank you Dan, Elisse and Judy for a fantastic weekend. Terry and Bunny

Sounds like a tongue in cheek review but it's true
I hate to disparage people who seem to be trying but the proprietors of this B&B are inept and a bit odd at best -- scary at worst. A half hour before arriving at the inn, we were stopped by the local police. A brake light was out but I think curiosity about the out-of-state plates was his main concern. He warned me away from this inn saying he wouldn't have his family stay there. Hmmm? As the skies darkened and we drove the winding roads of McDowell County searching for signs, I become increasingly unnerved. Made it there and survived the night. Awoke to no breakfast, no coffee, and no sign that the proprietors were still on this side of the living or the law. I threw the room keys on the table and left fast. Later, got a message on our home phone apologizing but their excuse made no sense--power outage in their part of the inn. I'm pretty tolerant and pretty well-travelled. This inn is overpriced and suitable only for visitors researching characters for a twilight-zone type short story.

Unique
Had the pleasure of staying here for the Dinner in the Dining Car Weekend with Railroad Historian & Author James D. Porterfield. Such an interesting evening with a delicious dinner prepared by Chef Dan with comments from Jim Porterfield on origin of the recipes. Not being as big of a railfan as many there that night it was fun to see them rush out with cameras in hand each time a train went by. Wish we could have stayed longer to enjoy the area and the rest of the weekend. We had a lovely drive there although we did get lost trying to find the inn. Anyone interested in trains or coal mines and need a place to stay---this is for you!! They've done a remarkable job.

New Years 2011 Stay
I love locations with Character, and you cannot do better on that count than the Elkhorn Inn and Theatre. Moreover, Dan is an amazing chef. I found the Elkhorn Inn on a whim but will be a regular. If you like West Virginia, this is one location that shouldn't be missed! Dirk

Visit to the Elkhorn Fall of 2011, Delightful!
Next to Hatfield McCoy Trails, Ashland ATV Resort, the Elkhorn Inn has historic railroad museum, art gallery, books signings by authors who visit, the most imaginative gourmet meals to entice the pallette, antiques, railway goes by Inn several times a day and the Inn offers a great balcony view of the passing trains. Hosts Dan and Elisse Clark are the proprietors and have a wealth of talent between the two. Dan is a gourmet chef, Elisse is an artist. Her gallery has not only her work but paintings from all over the US and overseas. I am so impressed by them. They are awakening LIFE in a sleepy little hid away village!

Weekend Getaway
My boyfriend took me to this inn for a surprise getaway so we could go to the Bramwell Oktoberfest and have a nice place to stay. From the moment we walked in the door the hosts were two of the the kindest people and so accommodating. They showed us around and made sure we had everything. We stayed in the blue room which was very cozy and had a feel as if it brought you back into another time with its quaint furniture and private bath. In the morning the owners made us a hot breakfast and gave us excellent information on places to eat that day. Took them up on their sushi recommendation and they definitely know what they are talking about as the place they recommended had to have been the best sushi I'd ever had. If you are looking for an amazing getaway in a beautiful area with excellent people definitely check this place out!

VERY DIRTY BATHROOM AND DINING AREA
I STAYED AT THE ELKHORN INN ON AUGUST 5-6, 2011. I WAS IN TOWN FOR A FUNERAL. THE ROOM WE STAYED IN HAD DEAD BUGS AND BUG SHELLS IN THE WINDOW WELLS AND IN THE CEILING. THE BEDS SHEETS LOOKED CLEAN WITH HOPEFULLY CLEAN LINEN. THE BATH LINEN WAS NEW SO THERE WAS NO PROBLEM WITH THEM. THE BATHROOM AND DINING AREAS WERE A DIFFERENT MATTER. THE BATHROOM TOILET WAS FILTY DIRTY. THERE WAS FECES ALL OVER THE INSIDE OF THE BOWL AND LOOKED AND SMELLED AS IF IT HAD NOT BEEN CLEANED IN A LONG TIME. THERE WAS DEAD BUGS ALL OVER THE BATHROOM AND LIVE ONES CRAWLING ON THE WALLS. WE FEEL WE WERE OVERCHARGED FOR THE CONDITIONS WE ENCOUNTERED. THE DISHES WE WERE GIVEN TO EAT FROM FOR THE BREAKFAST WAS DIRTY AND HAD TO BE REPLACED BEFORE WE COULD EAT THE COLD BREAKFAST WE WERE OFFERED. I DROPPED SOME WATER ON THE BATHROOM FLOOR AND WHEN I WIPED IT UP WITH A PAPER TOWEL, IT WAS FILTY BLACK WITH DIRT FROM THE FLOOR. THERE WAS SPIDER WEBS ALL OVER THE PLACE INCLUDING THE STAIRS TO GO UPSTAIRS. I SPOKE WITH DAN CLARK ABOUT THE CONDITIONS OF THE BATHROOM AND TOLD HIM OF THE FACT THAT I HAD TO TRY TO CLEAN THE FACEBOWL AND TOILET SEAT BEFORE I FELT SAFE TO USE IT. I COULD NOT FIND A BRUSH FOR THE TOILET BOWL OR I WOULD HAVE TRIED TO CLEAN IT. I ALWAYS CARRY LYSOL WITH ME AND BOY DID I HAVE TO USE IT HERE. HE REPLIED THAT HE WOULD GO UP AND CLEAN IT. I WOULD NOT RECCOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE AND I WOULD NEVER PAY $99.00 PLUS TAX PER NIGHT TO STAY AT SUCH A FILTY PLACE. I AM GLAD THE HONEY I REQUESTED WAS IN A SMALL JAR AND UNOPENED BECAUSE THE TRAY IT WAS ON WAS DIRTY ALSO. MY HUSBAND ASKED FOR SOME JELLY AND WAS GIVEN SOMETHING THAT LOOKED LIKE IT HAD BEEN THERE FOR A LONG TIME. IT WAS SO OLD, IT WAS WATERY AND HAD TO BE STIRRED UP A LOT. I WOULD NOT EAT IT. DAN AND ELISSE CLARK WAS VERY PERSONABLE BUT THEIR INN WAS A MESS. THANK YOU, ERNEST AND ESLINE FERRELL ELYRIA, OHIO

2010 October Sky Festival Pleasant Surprise
My husband and I attended the October Sky Festival this year for the first time to see his favorite author, Homer Hickam. We had no idea what to expect when we were booking a place to stay just searching the area options on-line, but we knew we didn't want to stay as far away as Bluefield and drive an hour to the festival. We booked a room at the Elkhorn Inn with a private bath and a train view, and it was not only comfortable but had extra amenities that we didn't assume it would have (e.g., feather comforter). We had dinner at the Inn both nights, and Chef Dan served excellent meals on both occasions! The first night (the night before the October Sky Festival), Homer Hickam stopped by the Inn with his wife and an actor from the movie to visit our Innkeepers. To our surprise, Elisse came up to our room and invited us down to meet them while they were there visiting, and that started our wonderful, relaxing weekend in Southern WV! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and appreciated their hospitality and good food!!

History and Elegance, comfort and beauty!
Just LOVED this place. I could close my eyes and climb the stairs and imagine the Coal company's Execs entertaining and doing business there. I'm sure it is MUCH more beautiful now though than it was when it originated. Dan and Elisse are wonderful fun and accomodating hosts. Hope I get to visit again someday. We never go the same place twice, but I think we'd make an exception here.
