Inspect the remains and mosaics of a 3rd-century synagogue and enter the old bathhouse in a park paved with hot springs. 

Running along the scenic shore of the Sea of Galilee, Hamat Tiberias National Park is a fascinating historic archaeological site. It is known for the ruins of an ancient synagogue and its 17 hot springs that are said to contain healing properties. See the streams, springs and steam of this otherworldly terrain. 

Near the entrance to the park, enter the Hamam Suleiman Museum. This ancient bathhouse provides an insight into bygone rituals. Peer into the old baths and imagine this place as it would have operated in its heyday. Pilgrims frequently came to bathe here until the middle of the 1940s.

Wander through the picturesque grounds and snap photos of the various basins full of warm water, in which religious people were allowed to bathe even on Shabbat. Relax with a picnic on the grass and listen to the gentle flow of the water in the Roman Spring.

Check out the ruins of the Hamat Tiberias synagogue that dates back to the 3rd century. Comprised of three distinct sections, its mosaic floor is thought to be the oldest preserved mosaic in Israel. Admire its portrayal of Helios the sun god, which is depicted in the center of a zodiac. In the corners are women who represent the four seasons consider the absorbing symbolism of their appearances.

Note that the Hamat Tiberias National Park, which once existed as the ancient village of Hamat, was re-discovered in 1921. The park opens daily year round from early morning until late afternoon. 

Head into the southern outskirts of Tiberias to find Hamat Tiberias National Park. From the city center, drive about 10 minutes or walk less than 1 hour to reach the park, which is in the Ganei Menora district. Explore the surrounding area for other interesting sites such as the Ancient Roman Theater, the Aqua Kef and Gai Beach Water Park.
