Experience quiet rural life in this laid-back village, which has a cluster of interesting shops and attractions and is close to some of Western Australia’s renowned wineries and wildlife.

The small and serene town of Witchcliffe serves as a quieter alternative to its louder, bustling neighbor, Margaret River, while still offering easy access to all the wineries, beaches and caves of the surrounding region. Taste top-tier wines, discover dramatic wild surf beaches and enjoy adventures out in the open air.

The hamlet, which locals affectionately refer to as “Witchy,” is thought to have gotten its name from a nearby cave, which was discovered in 1900. The town was formally established in 1922 by the government-run Group Settlement Scheme. With the flourishing of a nearby saw mill, the town grew in size. Explore the district today to see several charming buildings that date back to the early days of Witchcliffe.

Stroll along Witchcliffe’s main street and browse the quirky goods for sale in the local-run gift shop. Pause for coffee and freshly baked pie before setting out to discover the surrounding area.

Just outside of the main town is the Bellview Shell Collection, which features a fascinating display of shells showcased in the owners’ own home. Several worthwhile wineries can also be found nearby. Make an appointment at the family-owned Swallows Welcome Winery and Art Studio for an owner-led tour, a tasting of red wines and a viewing of watercolor paintings. The Cape Dutch-style Voyager Estate Winery and Leeuwin Estate, the latter of which also hosts an art gallery, are both within a 10-minute drive of Witchcliffe.

Outdoor opportunities are also in abundance near Witchcliffe. Take a walk along the wild Redgate Beach and marvel as the Indian Ocean swell pounds the boulders and outcrops at the water’s edge. Try surfing and learn about the tragic fate that befell the SS Georgette at the beach’s shipwreck memorial.

Caving is another popular activity in this area. Head to Lake Cave to inspect its striking “suspended table,” a crystal formation suspended from the cave’s its ceiling. Take a self-guided audio tour of the fossil-filled Mammoth Cave, which is accessible to wheelchair users.

Witchcliffe is just 6 miles (10 kilometers) south of Margaret River. Rent a car to properly explore the region.
