Follow a trail that weaves around dense forests to viewpoints of a magnificent waterfall. Spot wildlife including bears and birds of prey.

Upper Yellowstone Falls is one of several waterfalls that decorate the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Marvel at the rushing water of Upper Yellowstone Falls, which plunges over a cliff into the Yellowstone River. The waterfall rises to a height of 109 feet (33 meters) at the southern edge of the canyon.

See this natural landmark by walking the South Rim Trail, a scenic route that begins on the south side of Chittenden Bridge. The trail takes you amid an area of tall pine trees, through which you can catch glimpses of the river. Stop at Upper Falls View, a lookout that presents the best views of the thundering, milky white water and its verdant surroundings.

Another option is crossing the bridge and following the path to the Brink of the Upper Falls observation deck. Here you get to experience the full force of the falls and river. Varied wild animals inhabit the forests and river valley. Among commonly spotted wildlife are butterflies, coyotes, grizzly bears, ospreys and swallows.

Continue your adventure on the South Rim Trail’s northern section and visit areas that overlook the 308-foot-tall (94-meter) Lower Yellowstone Falls. Sightings of the smaller Crystal Falls are possible, too. Painters and photographers love Artist Point for its panoramic views of the dramatic canyon and distant Lower Yellowstone Falls.

Get closer to Lower Yellowstone Falls by hiking down the 328 steps of the steep Uncle Tom’s Trail. Observe as sunlight and mist from the falls create pretty rainbows. Benches and platforms provide places to rest along the path. Note that this trail may close after heavy rainfall.

Upper Yellowstone Falls is open year-round. It’s about a 10-minute drive south of Canyon Village. Find free parking at Chittenden Bridge and at the trailhead to Brink of the Upper Falls. You can also park at the start of Uncle Tom’s Trail, which offers an alternative entry to the South Rim Trail.
