A huge stash of Anglo-Saxon gold and a Spitfire aircraft are among the treasures that help this museum tell the story of the Potteries region.

The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery in Hanley reveals facts and stories about the region’s history, art and science. It documents the development of the Potteries district, made up of towns in and around Stoke-on-Trent that played a key role in Britain’s Industrial Revolution. Weave through the various exhibits to make sense of the region’s intriguing past.

Venture back in time in the Local History gallery, which consists of rooms set up to resemble typical Stoke-on-Trent life in the 19th and 20th centuries. An old-fashioned chip shop stands beside a schoolroom and a pub, offering a glimpse into the quaint customs of yesteryear.

Enter the Spitfire Gallery to see the Supermarine Spitfire from World War II. During 2018 the display has held a temporary artistic model of a Spitfire, crafted by KMF engineers. Rummage through the Archaeology section to learn about the impact of the Romans on the area and see fine examples of ceramics from the early pottery factories in nearby Burslem.

Pots and tiles also embellish the Ceramics gallery. Examine some of the more curious artifacts, including the vast collections of frog mugs and cow creamer jugs. Notice the period costumes and textiles in the Design area and the artworks on industrial themes in the Fine Art gallery. The museum also has a Natural Science exhibit on the diverse landscapes and habitats adorning the Potteries.
