This relaxed coastal town welcomes visitors with its sweeping beach and surf spots, farmers market, mountain scenery and nature walks.

At the foot of the Hottentots Holland Mountains and affording views across False Bay is the pretty beach town of Strand. Founded as a fishing village, today Strand is a lively resort popular for its long stretch of beach- and water sports, farmers’ market and access to the Helderberg Wine Route.

The 3-mile- (5-kilometer-) long beach is the focal point of the town. In fact, Strand takes its name from the Afrikaans word for “beach”. Melkbaai, the main beach, is known as one of South Africa’s safest swimming beaches and is a favorite of vacationing families. Kids can enjoy riding the water slides at Waterworld Strand. Swim in the Olympic-size swimming pool located next to the Strand Pavilion.

If you are feeling energetic then Strand presents a wide range of sporting activities. Surfing forms an integral part of the beach culture here and the waves are suitable for all surfing levels, including beginners. Along Beach Road you’ll find numerous surf clubs offering lessons and equipment rental. Play a round of golf or go trout fishing on the Lourens River.

Go for a leisurely walk along the wide promenade that runs parallel to the beach. Take a seat at one of the cafés and restaurants with outdoor seating areas to enjoy the views off False Bay. At the weekend local vendors set up stalls along the promenade and offer various arts and crafts. On Fridays the Strand Farmers Market hosts stalls with everything from flowers and confectionery to handicrafts and local food.

When visiting Strand don’t miss out on a trip to the nearby Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve. Walking trails of varying distances traverse a rugged mountainous terrain where over 1,300 species of fynbos and around 110 bird species reside. Less challenging walks wind around Helderberg Nature Reserve.

Strand is a 35-minute drive from Cape Town. Rent a car and explore the Helderberg Wine Route, which travels through over 20 wine estates between the towns of Somerset West and Gordon’s Bay.
