St. Malo Citadel
St. Malo Citadel

The Old Town of Saint-Malo is one giant fortification, surrounded by medieval ramparts and housing historic churches and stunning castles.

The St. Malo Citadel is the part of Old Town surrounded by medieval ramparts, a restored wonder that has been brought back to life in the wake of World War II bombings. It stands proudly against the edge of the ocean, indicating the port’s long and exhilarating history. Explore Saint-Malo’s historic center by striding around the ramparts and exploring the sights hidden within the citadel.

Saint-Malo’s history stretches back to the 1st century B.C., but the citadel was a much later addition. Roam around fortifications that were created in the 12th century by Bishop Jean de Chatillon. The citadel was almost entirely destroyed during the bombing raids of 1944 and it took almost 30 years to restore the city to its former medieval appearance.

Stroll around the restored ramparts of the city, made from gray granite and standing at 12 feet (4 meters) tall. The outline of the citadel walls remain largely intact, so you can follow the trail of the walls for just over 1 mile (2 kilometers) around the town.

The citadel contains some of the most exciting attractions in all of Saint-Malo. Visit the Castle of Saint-Malo, which today hosts the city hall and a museum dedicated to the history of the town. Read about the occupation of the area during World War II and the privateers known as “corsairs” who operated from the town in the 18th century.

Stop at other sights in the citadel, pausing to admire views of the ocean and Saint-Malo Bay. The citadel hosts St. Vincent Cathedral, an elegant church from the 12th century that is instantly recognizable for its towering spire. Learn about the merchants and pirates of the citadel’s past in the Demeure de Corsaire, a museum in the southeastern corner of the citadel.

Walk to Porte Saint-Vincent, one of the main entrances to the Saint-Malo Citadel, from the town’s train station in 20 minutes. The cobbled streets and medieval attractions are best reached and explored on foot. The citadel is open throughout the year and can be explored for free.
