Prince George

Travel Guide

Enjoy exciting outdoor wonders in this gateway to northern British Columbia. While you’re here, take advantage of great shopping, services, arts and athletics.

Prince George is an intriguing land with a long history. For more than 10,000 years, the Lheidli T’enneh (pronounced KLATE-lee TEN-ay) First Nation people roamed its meadows, forded its rivers and established trade with other aboriginal groups. See the same beautiful natural areas of western Canadian that they enjoyed and appreciate the urban centers that have developed to meet all your modern needs.

In this vast region, find your own secret fishing hole at one of 1,600 local lakes, rivers and streams. Kayak in quiet waters and fish for trout. Take a wooded walk among sacred cedars at a rare inland rainforest, Prince George’s Ancient Forest. Stroll through the visual arts of Two Rivers Gallery.

During the summer, explore trails at the ever-expanding Pidherny biking site. Follow your backcountry wanderlust on 124 miles (200 kilometers) of hiking trails at Tabor Mountain Recreation. Stay overnight at mountain cabins on Raven Lake and other remote spots. When the snow falls, visit Otway Nordic Ski Centre for cross-country skiing and a biathlon range.

For diverse interests, Prince George offers British Columbia’s northernmost winery, one of Canada’s most highly subscribed-to theaters, a rare drive-in cinema and an intriguing Canadian bookstore. Learn about science and nature through the interactive exhibits of The Exploration Place.

Here in British Columbia’s “Northern Capital,” you’ll find some of the province’s favorite restaurants and excellent sports facilities. Shop at malls and big-box centers to replenish your travel supplies and visit the year-round Saturday farmers market. In the evening, relax with your choice of a Prince George Symphony Orchestra performance or a local hockey game.

Enjoy seasonal festivals that showcase the area’s history and natural environment, including Prince George's Traditional Pow Wow, the West of the Rockies Pro Rodeo, Northern Lights Festival and WinterLights Celebration.

Fly into Prince George International Airport or enjoy a scenic 8-hour drive from either Vancouver or Edmonton. Look for the 27-foot (6.2-meter) statue of Mr. PG who welcomes you to Prince George’s wonders.

Leen

Its a quiet town, with lots of nature. I enjoyed the peace and it helped me wind down after living in NYC.

4/5 - Good

There was a lot of street activity amongst groups and social settings so having a car to limit any negative activity was a plus.
