Just steps away from the beach, take a break from the bustle of Viareggio in its pine forest. Enjoy a relaxing stroll, a scenic bike ride, or go camping.

Viareggio’s pine forest (pineta) sets it apart from other Italian resort towns. While the town and its promenade offer a bustling assortment of shops and restaurants, the pineta provides a peaceful contrast. Enjoy nature among the beautiful Mediterranean pines that populate the area.

The pineta is split into two sections: the Western Forest and the Eastern Forest. The Western Forest receives more foot traffic because it is located close to the center of town. Although it is small, this area is the perfect place to stop for a relaxing break. Walk, rent a bike or even rent a pony-drawn carriage to see the sights. The Western Forest also has tennis courts, mini golf courses and a little swan-filled lake.

The Eastern Forest, by contrast, is much larger and more varied. The outside perimeter of the park can be traversed by car or bike. Restaurants, bars and playgrounds provide amusement for visitors of all ages. The Villa Borbone, located in the forest, is a historic three-story palazzo. Visit one of its traveling exhibits or attend one of the cultural events taking place in the villa’s exquisite garden.

Get in touch with nature in the heart of the Eastern Forest, which is less cultivated than the rest of the area.

The Eastern Forest is a wonderful place to bring children because of the variety of activities that it has to offer. Cycle around, play mini golf, ride the merry-go-round or hop on the miniature train. For refreshments or snacks, stop at one of the vending stands within the forest. You can also bring a picnic to enjoy in the shade of the pines.

Should you wish to return to the hub of Viareggio, the center of town is about half a mile (1 kilometer) from the beginning of the Eastern Forest, and can easily be reached by car, bus or bike. You can also walk to the beach directly from the forest.
