Paradise Beach Tours

Pondicherry showing a sandy beach as well as an individual male

This private beach provides a slice of idyllic tropical beauty at the meeting point of a river and the Indian Ocean.

Enjoy a break from the colonial landmarks and historic attractions of Pondicherry and relax on the virgin sands of Paradise Beach. This serene and private beach sits at the tip of a peninsula where the Bay of Bengal and Chunnambar River converge. Officially called Chunnambar Beach, Paradise Beach was given its popular name by the local residents who delight in escaping to a quiet haven close to the city center.

Access to the beach is via a short boat ride from the northern shores of the Chunnambar River. Sit on the boat’s upper deck and watch as the white-sand, palm-lined sandbank comes into view. Step off the boat, go walking along the seashore and paddle in the warm water. The views are delightful along the river and out across the Bay of Bengal, so make sure to pack your camera.

Bring your bathing suit and enjoy a swim on the ocean side of the beach. The small waves are good fun to splash around in and try bodysurfing. A watersports tour agency is located on the beach. It offers speedboat excursions and water-sled rides. You can also rent Jet Skis and kayaks.

When you get hungry, purchase light meals, snacks and refreshments from the beach restaurant. It has an extensive menu that includes traditional Indian curries and Western-inspired dishes. The restaurant gets especially busy on weekends and during the peak tourist season.

The beach is located about 6 miles (10 kilometers) south of Pondicherry’s city center. Get here by taking an auto-rickshaw or taxi to Chunnambar Boat House. From the boathouse a ferry ride to the beach takes about 10 minutes. There is a fee for the boat ride.

Paradise Beach is open daily until sunset. Boats may not operate throughout the monsoon months of June to October. Although it’s the high season, late October to March is the best time to visit as temperatures are lower and rainfall is minimal.
