Upload your portrait to the Face Wall, see a 19th-century locomotive and play with fire in the steel manufacturing simulation of this fascinating museum.

Newcastle Museum is a contemporary complex with an eclectic range of exhibits and programs. The museum is housed in the charming and historic red-brick Honeysuckle Railway workshops. Embark on a guided tour with a museum volunteer for a detailed understanding of the various facets of this impressive site.

The museum has four permanent exhibits among the many temporary displays. Bring your kids to learn about science in the Supernova section, which has interactive displays and hands-on experiments. This area allows children to touch, feel and discover. Take toddlers to the Mininova sector, which has puzzles, climbing frames and mazes.

Go to Fire and Earth to learn about coal mining and steel production. The display teaches you about the region’s cultural history and how it influenced the steel industry. Watch the steel-making simulation and feel the heat from the experiment.

For a sense of the city’s history, inspect the fascinating displays in the area called A Newcastle Story. See historic artifacts, such as a pipe organ and a locomotive from the 1800s, in the Link Gallery.

Snap photos of your favorite exhibits, artifacts and works of art. Among the highlights is the Face Wall, where museum visitors can upload their own self-portraits.

Browse the items for sale in the museum shop, where you will find toys and games, jewelry and other souvenirs.

Initially founded in West Newcastle in 1988 as the Newcastle Regional Museum, the site changed to its current name and location in a grand reopening in 2011. Enter the site and see its general exhibits for free. It opens Tuesday through Sunday from morning until late afternoon.

Find Newcastle Museum in the Civic area in the city center of Newcastle. It is several blocks south of the Hunter River and can easily be reached by bus or on foot in the city center. See nearby sights, such as the Civic Theatre, Newcastle City Hall and the Newcastle Art Gallery.
