Climb to the top of this lakeside mountain to dine while enjoying panoramic views across the Swiss Alps.

Perched on the edge of Lake Lugano, Monte San Salvatore offers some of the most breathtaking views in the southern Swiss Alps. At nearly 3,000 feet (912 meters) above sea level, this peak in the Lepontine Alps is becoming one of the most popular natural attractions in the region. Ride the Monte San Salvatore funicular to its summit to enjoy the panoramic views over a meal at the mountaintop restaurant. Hike down the steep terrain to experience the joy of trekking in the Alps. It’s a great way to see the lake from a different perspective.

Choose from several ways to experience Monte San Salvatore, each culminating with the stunning vistas afforded by its stunning location. Board the funicular from the center of Lugano to travel in comfort to the top of the mountain in just 10 minutes.

For more exercise, follow one of the hiking paths that lead from the town to the summit. A number of trails deviate from the main path, allowing you to explore the vegetation and the fascinating mountainous landscape. Continue along the path from the summit to reach Ciona, a quaint mountain village.

Photograph the 360-degree views across the lake, the city and the undulating landscape that sprawls toward the horizon. Enjoy Mediterranean fare on the terrace of the mountaintop restaurant as you gaze across the Plain of Lombardy and the Swiss Alps. The relaxed restaurant offers lunch and dinner as well as a selection of warm and cold drinks.

Monte San Salvatore is located on the outskirts of Lugano. The funicular runs every 30 minutes in summer the last return ride is late in the evening. Arrive prepared for a variety of weather as the rising altitude means that temperatures can drop very quickly. A fee applies for the funicular but hikers can visit the mountain free of charge.
