This rugged and scenic beach on the Basque coast is popular with surfers and a great place to escape the crowds of Biarritz.

Escape the throngs of beachgoers that head to Biarritz’s other central beaches and relax on the attractive golden sands of Marbella Beach. Framed by rugged cliffs at the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, this is one of Biarritz’s most unspoiled beaches. Come here to enjoy leisurely sunbathing, exceptional scenery and great surfing.

Marbella Beach is a continuation of Côte des Basques beach. Because it is a little harder to access, Marbella is generally less crowded than Biarritz’s other beaches. Get to the beach via a steep staircase and a short walk across rocks.

The surf breaks at Marbella Beach are popular with swimmers, surfers and body-boarders. Surfers can expect consistent waves year-round. However, you should be wary of exposed rocks. There are no surf shops or schools on the beach so you’ll need to bring your own equipment. Find rental shops at Côte des Basques and in Biarritz’s city center.

If you are come to Marbella Beach to relax, you’ll find plenty of space to throw down a towel and sunbathe. Gaze out across the Bay of Biscay and watch the local surfers riding the waves. On sunny days, you can clearly make out the Spanish Pyrenees. The beach also provides a gorgeous setting for memorable sunsets.

There is one café at the beach, situated at the top of the stairs. Here, you can purchase drinks, ice creams and snacks. The café can become busy during the summer months, so bring a picnic to avoid lining up.

Lifeguards patrol the beach from June through August. Look for the flags that indicate the safe areas for watersports and swimming.

Marbella Beach is about a 10-minute drive from Biarritz’s city center. A public bus stop and limited free parking can be found on the street above the beach. When the tide is out, walk between Marbella Beach and Côte des Basques. Find Milady Beach nearby, separated from Marbella Beach by a breakwater. This large beach has a beachfront garden, children’s playground and plenty of free parking.
