Take a break from all things urban at Kiyomizugaoka Park, a calm green oasis near the center of Satsumasendai. This soothing environment hosts a number of diverse photogenic landscapes, from leafy forests to verdant lawns.
Kiyomizugaoka Park occupies a protected area set among several hotels and shops. Amble around the peaceful park, where landscapes adhere to the principles of Japanese gardening. Note how the harmonious green areas do not attempt to fake nature, but exhibit its beauty in its natural forms.
Stroll down winding paths past hedges, dense forest areas and sloped, grassy clearings. Admire sweeping views of the Sendai River from the elevated areas in the park's south section. Flower displays add intermittent bursts of bold color to the mostly green terrain.
Bring the kids to the playground, where they can clamber in colorful playhouses, crawl through tunnels and slip down a big slide. If the weather is nice, pack a picnic and eat under the shade of one of the park’s trees.
After meandering through the park, continue west along the Sendai River banks to reach the tranquil Shinao Shrine. This shrine, a tribute to the Shinto gods, features an exquisite torii gate and an inner shrine containing objects of worship so sacred they are kept hidden from view.
Travel across the river to the north and visit the Nitta Shrine. This gorgeous temple sits atop an elevated hillock and offers commanding vistas of Satsumasendai.
Kiyomizugaoka Park is located west of downtown Satsumasendai. Follow the southern banks of the Sendai River to get here on foot or come by bus. The park is open daily and is free to enter.
