This pedestrian bridge, known for its lampposts featuring historical paintings, spans Interstate 787 to connect Albany’s downtown and the Hudson River.

Hudson River Way is a pedestrian bridge that connects Albany’s historic downtown to Albany Riverfront Park. Walk across the bridge to experience an outdoor museum. The bridge’s lampposts bear paintings depicting Albany’s history.

Check out the 30 lampposts lining both sides of Hudson River Way. Each features a trompe l’oeil painting that depicts a piece of Albany’s history. Each story is focused around an artifact some are unique objects that were found through archeological digs, while others are simply everyday objects. Begin your tour 450 million years ago, when Albany was at the bottom of a prehistoric sea. As you move over the bridge, from the city toward the river, the story continues, illustrating the lives of its early settlers and continuing to modern day.

Note the bricks that make up the surface of Hudson River Way. While state and federal aid partially funded the creation of the bridge, Albany needed to cover the balance. To do this, they created the “Build it Brick by Brick” campaign. More than 10,000 Albany citizens, businesses, organizations and other individuals rose to the challenge, purchasing bricks which they then inscribed with personalized messages. These bricks now pave the walkway.

Cross the bridge and enter the oasis that is Riverfront Park. Ride your bike, go for a leisurely stroll or take your dog for a walk along the water. Watch boats float down the Hudson River. Relax in the the 800-seat amphitheater and see what events are taking place there. During Thursday evenings in the summer, tune in to the Alive at Five concerts. In the fall, listen to the Albany Riverfront Jazz Festival. Enjoy beautiful views of the river and Albany’s skyline across the way.

Visit Hudson River Way throughout the year. The bridge crossing is a short walk and easily accessible. Whether you use it as a way to access the city or the river or simply want to learn more about Albany’s history, Hudson River Way offers a short and pleasant journey.
