Note that you can't flush toilet paper (my other hotel in Kaohsiung was the same), you must put it in the provided bin. This was my first experience with this and I was concerned about it, but in reality (a) it doesn't matter in practice and you get used to it very quickly (portable bidet or the shower to feel cleaner), and (b) it's actually true in a lot of places in Taiwan. In the early hours, the elevator from street level doesn't work. You'll need to walk up/down the stairs to the first level and then you can access an elevator from there.
