Stroll along a meandering trail to encounter sand dunes and a former military site beneath an array of impressive cliffs.

Fort Ord Dunes State Park is a serene and secluded region with coastal trails for cyclists and walkers. It incorporates a 4-mile (6-kilometer) stretch of picturesque sand dunes in front of Monterey Bay. Enjoy the quiet in this open space that is separated from the noise and bustle of city life by the barrier of dunes.

Wander along the 1,500-foot (460-meter) trail with spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. The modern boardwalk leads to a cliff-top viewing platform with an excellent vista of the water and the surrounding terrain.

Arrive at the eerie, deteriorating buildings of Fort Ord and learn about its history through the site’s exhibits. The former military complex was run by the United States Army and once held 15 rifle ranges. Take a cell phone tour of the fort by downloading a guide.

Make sure to stay on the provided paths and trails as several bird species, such as snowy plovers and red-tailed hawks, use the dunes as nesting areas. Capture photos of the fascinating dunes and the native vegetation keeping the sand in place. Sunbathe on the sand and go beachcombing with your family for marine treasures in rock pools.

The undulating sandy mounts provide a scenic backdrop as you lay down a blanket for a picnic. Listen to the soothing sounds of the crashing waves and the seagulls. Stay late to see the sun dramatically falling to the horizon as day turns to night.

Note that vehicle access is permitted daily from morning until a little after sunset. Bring clothing layers to be prepared for changeable weather.

Fort Ord Dunes State Park is just north of Monterey in the Central California region. Ride a bus to one of the stops a little inland from the park and walk through one of the beach’s entrances. Leave your car in the designated parking area. Outside the park, find part of California State University of Monterey Bay.
