Eluanbi Lighthouse

Visit Taiwan’s armored lighthouse at the southern point of the island for panoramic views of the ocean.

The Eluanbi Lighthouse is an iconic beacon on the southern cape of Taiwan that stands at the point between the Pacific Ocean and the Taiwan Strait. It is part of Cape Eluanbi in Kenting National Park and is known as “The Light of East Asia” due to its intense light. Make sure to visit this 19th-century attraction that dates back to the Qing dynasty.

Capture photos of the historic lighthouse that juts out from the southern end of Taiwan. The concrete tower and surrounding building are almost entirely white, with charming window patterns and a balcony. Enjoy the peaceful ambiance around the lighthouse, where miles of green meadows meet the soothing rush of the ocean.

Learn about the Qing dynasty and the English architect who built the lighthouse in 1888. It is claimed that this is the only lighthouse in the world to be armed. Look for the trench and gun holes in the wall. This was to protect the structure from raids by indigenous people. It was later damaged and repaired during Japanese rule and again during World War II.

The lighthouse still functions today and is considered an important part of Kenting National Park. See the powerful light flash white once every ten seconds, while revolving entirely twice per minute.

Near the lighthouse, you will find the Eluanbi Memorial of Taiwan’s Eight Magnificent Sceneries. Admire its small obelisk with inscriptions made of Chinese symbols.

Explore the hiking paths along the green fields, where you can enjoy the serenity of nature. Rent a scooter to get around the scenic region quickly and conveniently.

Entrance to this lighthouse area is inexpensive, with certain discounts available and free parking.

The Eluanbi Lighthouse stands on the southern tip of Taiwan. It is 62 miles (100 kilometers) south of Pingtung City. Take a bus along the scenic route for several hours to reach Cape Eluanbi, where you will find the lighthouse.

Very gorgeous area. The lighthouse itself is quite pretty and the views from the hill are spectacular. Unfortunately you cannot go up to the top of the lighthouse.
