I loved this property for its historic background and the preservation efforts Hampton/Hilton has made converting this previous mansion and grounds. The furnishings, common areas, veranda and grounds are beautiful and give a real sense of colonial Virginia, complete with a log cabin in back. The staff is excellent and had good suggestions for eating in the downtown historic district.
I had a nonhistoric room, which was up to Hampton’s excellent standards; breakfast in the morning was great for hot and cold items. The property has one elevator in the back; guests located in the back section have to traverse a number of different passageways to get to the lobby or breakfast area.
Some caveats for older travelers: as far as I could tell, the only entrance to the lobby requires going up about four steps - not easy in the dark or rain. There also is no pull-into entrance for autos in inclement weather; there is a canopy around back, but it is small. This is consistent with a historic property, but travelers should be aware - it was no fun checking in and unloading in the pouring rain.
The surrounding area has 25 mph streets that are one-way into the downtown and historic areas; lighting by lampposts is not the best; parking for restaurants and such is on the street and availability is varied.
I would definitely stay here again in earlier fall or summer; it was my bad luck that remnants of Hurricane Helene were affecting travels in the area.
