If you stay in Room 19 280, beware of the incessant freight elevator noise. You're also out of luck if you'd like a pen and notepad, or even a coffee machine (apparently they're available if you call for one, but they're STANDARD in many non-luxury hotels). The bathroom doesn't have a working standard shower head. We had to snake the rope showerhead over a stand to set it in place. And forget about taking a bath. There's no tub. Another interesting thing--if you give your key card to the person who offers express checkout and promises an email invoice, you won't have one in your inbox 3 business days later. The $100-per-night incidental charge also apparently lives on your credit card for at least 3 business days.
Yes, the lobby is gorgeous and the history is rich. But there is nothing exceptional about the rooms or the service in the Palmer House. Even the elevators advertise a "brand-new" pool...that is not actually open (as of June 22, 2025).
What an elegant, hollow mirage of luxury this place is! Don't be taken in. I certainly won't be staying here again.
